MCC opens conference with sweep over North Platte

NORTH PLATTE – The McCook Community College volleyball team opened Nebraska conference play Wednesday with a 3-0 sweep over North Platte Community College. MCC prevailed on the road, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-19.

"We played well, but we still need to improve," said MCC Assistant Coach Hannah Emerson.

Fernanda Merancio (freshman, Lamar, Colo.) led MCC with eight kills.

Victoria Thomas (sophomore, Houston, Texas) was credited with six kills, six digs, one solo block, one assist block and an ace. Gabby Caskey (freshman, Ogallala) led MCC with 15 digs added five kills, two assist blocks and an ace.

Gracen Tuttle (freshman, Ogallala) had four kills, one solo block and one assist block. Jisell Chumacero (sophomore, Eaton, Colo.) had three kills, three assist blocks and an ace.

Alexis Pontine freshman, Ignacio, Colo.) led the passing game with 24 assists and had eight digs with two ace serves.

"We are very happy with our serves, but we have to be consistent," Emerson said.

Greta Bolognini (freshman, Bergamo Italy/ Parkview Christian, Lincoln, Neb.) had eight digs and McKenna Crews (sophomore, Loveland, Colo.) had six.

MCC improves to 8-5 on the season and 1-0 in the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference (NCCAC.)

North goes to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in the Nebraska conference.

On Saturday, MCC travels to Beatrice to take on NCCAC opponent Southeast Community College at 1 p.m. then follow that with a 3 p.m. game against the Ottawa JVs.

MCC will return home Sept. 14 to host NCCAC foe Central Community College.

The rematch with North Platte is set for Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.
