MCC Volleyball sweeps Trinidad State in Thursday home action

The McCook Community College volleyball team swept past Trinidad State Thursday in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

"Tonight's match was a good, clean match for our players," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

MCC won by the scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-23.

"We weren't so much worried about Trinidad tonight but more focused on us and making sure we're implementing the things we worked on in practice," Kobza said.

Sophomore Makayla Brown (Colorado Springs) led MCC with 11 kills to go along with one assist block. Gabby Caskey (freshman, Ogallala) had six kills, four assist blocks and four digs. Freshman Fernanda Merancio (Lamar, Colo.) had five kills and one assist block.

Victoria Thomas (sophomore, Houston, Texas) had three kills, six digs and two assist blocks. Redshirt freshman Anna Williams, (Cheyenne, Wyo.) had two kills. Gracen Tuttle (freshman, Ogallala) added two kills and one assist block.

Jessie Jerome (freshman, Rawlins, Wyo.) led MCC with 24 assists and digs with eight. She had two kills, five aces and one assist block.

McKenna Crews (sophomore, Loveland, Colo.) had four digs, and Greta Bolognini (freshman, Bergamo Italy) had an ace serve.

MCC picks up its first win in the south sub region to go 1-2 and improve to 14-8 overall.

Trinidad State falls to 5-15 and 1-3.

On Friday MCC will host Otero Junior College (6-14, 3-0) at 6 p.m. on Stella Night. The volleyball team is asking fans to wear purple in support of Stella McConnell who is battling cancer. The team will take an extended "team" photo with Stella before the match on the west side of the Events Center bleachers. Area businesses are offering unicorn-themed popcorn and doughnuts with the proceeds going to the McConnell family.
