MCC Volleyball sweeps third match in four nights; tops Otero JC

The McCook Community College volleyball team swept its third opponent of the week, knocking off Otero Junior College Friday night in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. MCC won 25-21, 25-9, 26-24.

"Overall this week was a good week for us with three wins, all in three sets, so it was good to just come in tonight and take care of business," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

MCC picked up a 3-0 win Tuesday at home over Southeast Community College and a 3-0 win Thursday at home against Trinidad State Junior College.

"Tonight we had players who just excelled both offensively and defensively," Kobza said.

Freshman Fernanda Merancio (Lamar, Colo.) led the front-line attack with 11 kills and two assist blocks to go along with three digs. Victoria Thomas (sophomore, Houston, Texas) had nine kills, nine digs and one assist block.

Gabby Caskey (freshman, Ogallala) had six kills, six digs, four assist blocks and one ace. Gracen Tuttle (freshman, Ogallala) was credited with two kills and two assist blocks. Makayla Brown (sophomore, Colorado Springs) had one kill and three digs.

"Shoutout to Jessie Jerome, freshman setter, who played great volleyball tonight," Kobza said.

Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) filled the stat sheet with 27 assists, 13 digs, eight kills, three aces and three assist blocks.

McKenna Crews (sophomore, Loveland, Colo.) had nine digs. Greta Bolognini (freshman, Parkview Christian, Lincoln, Neb.) had eight digs and two aces. Jisell Chumacero (sophomore, Eaton, Colo.) was credited with three ace serves.

MCC improves to 2-2 in the Region IX south standings and 15-8 overall.

Otero Junior College goes to 6-15 overall and 3-1 in the south standings.

MCC will conclude their Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference schedule Tuesday at Columbus with a chance to clinch the conference. MCC, 5-0 will take on Central Community College, 2-1 in NCCAC and 11-15 overall. MCC won the first match of the year against the Raiders 3-2.

"We just have to get back to the grind next week and continue to win region matches," Kobza said.

The next south sub-region match will be Thursday at Lamar, Colo.

MCC's next home match will be Oct. 14 against No. 7 Western Nebraska.
