MCC’s Jisell Chumacero to play volleyball at Missouri Valley

McCook Community College sophomore Jisell Chumacero has signed a letter of intent to continue her volleyball career next season at Missouri Valley College, an NAIA school in Marshall, Mo.

"McCook is a rare place to be, with the family aspect of it all, but when I got to Marshall, if felt a lot like McCook," said Chumacero.

The middle blocker from Eaton, Colo., played in 29 matches as a sophomore where she had 72 kills and 46 blocks. She had five-block games twice this past fall against Amarillo College Aug. 27 and again Sept. 14 against Central Community College. She had a season-best 11 kills Aug. 25 at Kansas Wesleyan.

For her career she played in 51 matches with 129 kills, 87 blocks, 41 digs and 20 service aces.

Chumacero is the fourth MCC volleyball alum to commit to the Vikings in the past four years. She follows Genevieve Hopkinson who was a senior at MVC this past fall, and Brooklyn Evans and Haley Jacobsen who arrived there as juniors for the 2019-2020 season.

"Evie's talked to her and let her know what's going on," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. "They run a tough physical program, they're going to work out hard and she's done that here, so I think she'll be ready and will fit in well."

Chumacero said she's already missing all the road trips with her teammates, all the laughs and every one of her teammates – because she said, they all taught her something.

When asked what she'll miss about Coach Kobza, Chumacero said. "I'll miss her bluntness. She's very blunt but in a good way. She'll tell you how it is and push you every day. I think that's what I'll find with the coach in Missouri too."

Academically, Chumacero was named to the Dean's List all three of her previous semesters. In addition, she was selected to the National Junior College Athletic Association all-academic team following her freshman year. She was named to the third-team for student athletes attaining a grade-point average between 3.60 and 3.79.

She is an exercise science major, hoping to become a personal trainer.
