MCC’s Alexis Pontine to play volleyball next season at D2 Adams State

McCook Community College freshman Alexis Pontine has signed a letter of intent to continue her volleyball career next season at Adams State, an NCAA Division II school in Alamosa, Colorado.

The move after playing one season at McCook will allow the Ignacio, Colo., native to be closer to family.

"This really worked out for Lexi, with a new coach coming in who needed players and they offered a really great scholarship, and she can be closer to home," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

Last month, after Adams State hired Julie Allen to lead the volleyball program, Pontine met with Allen and toured the campus.

"It's a chance for me to be closer to my family, I really liked the environment the new coach is creating, and the facilities are great so it all seem like a great fit," she said.

Pontine played in 26 matches this past season and was second on the team with 521 assists, to go along with 124 digs, 38 kills, 25 service aces and 17 blocks.

She had 20 matches of double-digit assists, topping the 30 mark six times with the high of 44 coming Aug. 25 against Kansas Wesleyan. She had three matches with double-digit digs.

One of her favorite memories of the season came at home in a five-set win over rival North Platte. She had 24 assists in that match with three service aces and six digs.

"I have a lot of fond memories with my team and these players," Pontine said. "And Coach Kobza really cares about everyone and is always looking out for your best interest."

"Lexi was a great recruit for us. She's coachable, has great setting hands, is a leader and her mom's a coach," said Kobza said. "She was a player who came in and would get to work and it didn't matter if she started or didn't start."

Pontine plans to continue her coursework in exercise science.
