Lady Indians sweep Friday home match over Lamar

The McCook Community College volleyball team swept Lamar Community College Friday in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. The Lady Indians won 25-18, 25-21 and 25-11.

The win was the 150th career win for MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

"This was a great win for national coach's day," said Kobza.

Sophomore Fernanda Merancio (Lamar, Colo.) led MCC with 10 kills to go with two assist blocks. Romina Martinez (freshman, Cochabamba, Bolivia) added nine kills and eight digs. Jordan Duzenack (sophomore, Loveland, Colo.) had four kills and three assist blocks.

Gabby Caskey (sophomore, Ogallala) had nine kills in the middle with four assist blocks. Sophomore Gracen Tuttle (Ogallala) had three assist blocks and one kill.

Sophomore Greta Bolognini (Bergamo, Italy) had 14 digs and five aces. Caylin Barnett (freshman, McCook) had five digs.

Jessie Jerome (sophomore, Rawlins, Wyo.) led MCC with 18 assists to go along with six kills, two assist blocks, three digs and two aces. Freshman Kayten Hagan (Kearney) had 13 assists and 13 digs.

"This game showed us a few things we need to work on before Tuesday, so our plan is to have a good rest this weekend and then go aggressive in practice Monday."

Both teams entered play Friday at 1-3 in the Region IX South standings. Lamar falls to 8-14 overall. MCC improves to 17-10 with a pair of Region IX South games this week. On Tuesday MCC goes to Sterling, Colo., to face No. 5 Northeastern Junior College. On Saturday the Lady Indians will travel to Scottsbluff for a match against Western Nebraska.

The next home match will be Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. against Southeast Community College.
