MCC Volleyball wins 20th on homecoming night

The McCook Community College volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win Friday night at Homecoming for the team's 20th win of the season.

The Lady Indians prevailed over Otero Junior College 25-23, 25-10 and 25-14.

"Tonight I thought our defense played really well," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza. "We had some players that really took what we're doing in practice into consideration finally and that translated well in this match."

Freshman Romina Martinez (Cochabamba, Bolivia) led the offensive attack with 11 kills to go along with three assist blocks, a solo block at six digs.

"Romina, played very well. She had a lot of good hits around a pretty solid block of Otero," Kobza said.

Sophomores Jordan Duzenack (Loveland, Colo.) and Fernanda Merancio (Lamar, Colo.) had nine and seven kills. Duzenack added two assist blocks.

In the middle, Gabby Caskey (sophomore, Ogallala) had four assist blocks and two kills while freshman April Conilogue (Longmont, Colo.) added two kills and two assist blocks.

Sophomore Jessie Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) led MCC with 16 assists along with 10 digs, four kills, one assist block and three aces. Kayten Hagan (freshman, Kearney) had 10 assists and four digs.

Greta Bolognini (sophomore Bergamo, Italy / Parkview Christian, Lincoln, Neb.) had 10 digs and three assists while freshman Caylin Barnett (McCook/ Southwest HS) had nine digs and one ace.

Otero falls to 0-7 in the Region IX South standings and 6-19 overall.

MCC improves to 20-11 and 4-4 in the standings with a chance to climb as high as second with wins in their two remaining matches.

"We're pretty much looking at the last part of our season as one match at a time so we're done with this match and now on to the Trinidad State game," said Kobza.

MCC will host the Trojans at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. In their final home match, sophomores will be recognized prior to the start of the game and members of the record-setting 1980 volleyball team will be honored as well.

The Lady Indians close out the regular season at Lamar Oct. 28.
