Four MCC baseball players tabbed for Region IX top weekly honors

Four McCook Community College baseball players have been named the Region IX Baseball Players of the week ending Feb. 20.

Sophomore Daniel Bannon (Sydney, Australia) was named Region IX Player of the week and three pitchers who combined on the teams' second-ever no-hitter, were named co-pitchers of the week. Those pitchers were sophomore Alex Lozada (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico), Cade Webber (freshman, Kelowna, British Columbia) and sophomore Owen Lester (St. Charles, Ill.).

Bannon, a sophomore from Sydney, Australia, hit .474 (9-of-19) in four games last week in Texas with four doubles, six runs batted in, and he scored seven runs. He also swiped four bases – one in each game. For the season the sophomore pre-season All-NJCAA selection is batting .424 with eight RBIs in eight games.

On Friday, Lozada started the game for MCC but had to leave after one inning because of an injury. He allowed one baserunner on a walk and was relieved by Webber, who came in in relief and walked six while striking out seven in five innings pitched. Lester came on to throw the seventh inning, walking one and striking out two hitters.

The trio combined for seven innings pitched, zero runs, zero hits, and nine strikeouts.

THIS WEEK: MCC is scheduled to open Region IX play with a weekend series at Sterling, Colo. starting Saturday at 2 p.m. against Northeastern Junior College. MCC is 5-4 on the year and NJC is 6-9.

The NJC Athletic department is reminding all MCC fans that they will be charging admission at all home baseball games. Their box office for all events is open five days prior to each game and NJC Athletics recommends having fans purchase tickets in advance to speed their progress into the venues.
