MCC golfers tie for first place in weather-shortened Kansas tournament
GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The McCook Community College golf team tied for first place Monday in the Garden City tournament held at the Buffalo Dunes Golf Course. MCC tied Friends University with scores of 289.
The tournament – scheduled for Monday and Tuesday – was shortened to the Monday round because of weather.
"The field was small, but the competition was good, and we tied for first with Friends University, a top 25 NAIA team," said MCC Coach Tyler Loop.
Garden City finished third at 294 and Northeastern Junior College was fourth shooting a 311.
Ethan Gough (sophomore, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) brought home top individual honors, shooting a 69.
Cade Cryer (freshman, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) and Cayden Wynne (sophomore, Lincoln) were four shots back at 73. Jordan Bingham (sophomore, South Jordan, Utah) came in at 74 and sophomore Brayden Dahl (Outer West Durban, South Africa) had a 77.
Competing as individuals, Payton Craw (sophomore, McCook) shot a 76 and sophomore Spencer Wishon (Oberlin, Kan.) had an 80.
"The team is swinging good right now, but our ceiling is high and we haven't reached it," said Loop.
MCC has one final non-Region IX tournament before starting the second half of the Region IX schedule. On March 14 the team will compete in the All-Nebraska JUCO Challenge at Centura Hills, Cairo. The Region IX schedule starts back up March 23 at Lamar, Colo.
