MCC golfers shoot par to regain momentum at National Tournament

NEWTON, Kan. – The McCook Community College golfers responded from a season-worst round Tuesday to move up three spots in the standings in the NJCAA National Tournament. MCC shot a 288 (even par) Wednesday, and posted one of the top five team scores Wednesday.

On Tuesday MCC's best individual score was a 74 and by contrast on Wednesday, MCC's worst individual score was a 74, in the second day of the four-day tournament at the Sand Creek Golf Course.

"What a difference a day makes. A 20 stroke improvement today and we played much more like the team that got us here," said MCC Coach Tyler Loop.

Indian Hills leads the field after two rounds at 14 under par after shooting a 284 on the day. (That was just four strokes better than MCC). New Mexico Junior College is second at 13-under. A pair of Texas teams are tied for third place. Midland Community College and Western Texas College are at four-under.

Eastern Wyoming, from Region IX, is tied for 14th place, shooting a five-over 293 Wednesday.

"We left plenty of shots out there so I know we can do it again and now we are within shouting distance of the top 10," said Loop.

Only for of the 24 teams had scores lower than MCC on Wednesday. All five of MCC's golfers improved their scores Wednesday and all went up ranks on the individual leaderboard.

After an opening round 74 Tuesday, Ethan Gough (sophomore, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) shot the low individual round for MCC Wednesday, firing a three-under par 69 to move him up 39 spots from a tie for 61st place to a tie for 22nd place. He's at one-under for the tournament.

Sophomore Brayden Dahl (Outer West Durban, South Africa) had a one-over 73 on Wednesday to give him a two-day 150. Jordan Bingham (sophomore, South Jordan, Utah) was two-over on the day to bring him to 152.

Freshman Cade Cryer (freshman, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) was five shots better on Wednesday, with a 74. Sophomore Cayden Wynne (Lincoln) had the biggest improvement over his first round with an even-round 72 Wednesday.

Matthis Lefevre of New Mexico Junior College leads the individual player leader board with a two-day seven-under par. Three players are tied for second at six-under.

The tournament continues Thursday and Friday with the third and fourth rounds.
