MCC golfers move up five spots to 16th at National Tournament

NEWTON, Kan. – Despite an inconsistent day on the greens, the McCook Community College golfers moved up five positions Thursday into a tie for 16th place at the NJCAA National tournament at the Sand Creek Golf Course.

MCC shot a three-over 291 in the third round of the four-day tournament and moved up from 21st place.

"Today was much more of a grind than yesterday, the opportunity was there to go low, but we struggled with the putters," said MCC Coach Tyler Loop.

There was only one team outside the top six that had better scores than MCC on Thursday.

"However, we have moved up the rankings and closing the gap on some teams," Loop said.

Indian Hills leads the field after three rounds at 17-under par after shooting a 280 on the day. New Mexico Junior College and Odessa College are tied for second at 13-under and Midland Community College is the only other team with a below par score at 10-under.

Eastern Wyoming, from Region IX, shot a 297 Thursday, and is now just two shots ahead of MCC in a tie for 14th place.

Ethan Gough (sophomore, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) shot par on the day and remains at one-under for the tournament and in a tie for 24th place.

Sophomore Brayden Dahl (Outer West Durban, South Africa) also shot par Thursday and is a six-over after three days. He moved up 23 positions on the leaderboard Thursday. Sophomore Cayden Wynne (Lincoln) posted MCC's low round shooting a one-under par 71 to move up 26 places and is 10-over for the tournament.

Freshman Cade Cryer (freshman, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) was four-over on the day and is 13 over after the third round. Jordan Bingham (sophomore, South Jordan, Utah) shot a 79 and moves to 15-over.

"Tomorrow will make or break a lot of teams since the first three rounds have been near perfect weather and tomorrow calls for wind and possibly rain," Loop said.

Chris Wardrup of Midland Community College leads all golfers with a 10-under for the tournament. Jose Ramirez of Indian Hills is in second place at nine-under.

The tournament concludes Friday.
