MCC Volleyball wins fifth straight match with win over Lamar

LAMAR, Colo. – The McCook Community College volleyball team won its fifth-straight match Thursday topping Lamar in Region IX play. MCC took the match 3-1 over the Lopes.

"We started a different lineup to try out some new things and it did not work as the scores reflect," said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

After losing the first set 20-25, MCC came back to take the next three sets 29-27, 25-14, 25-13.

"We went back to the basics and got back on track mid-way through the second set," Kobza said.

A pair of freshmen led MCC on the attack as Jordan Duzenack (Loveland, Colo.) and Fernanda Merancio (Lamar, Colo.) both tied for team-high honors with 12 kills each. Merancio had two assist blocks and Duzenack one. Victoria Thomas (sophomore, Houston, Texas) had 11 kills, one ace and five digs.

Gabby Caskey (freshman, Ogallala) filled out the stat sheet with three kills, four assist blocks, one ace and nine digs. Gracen Tuttle (freshman, Ogallala) had three kills and one assist block. Anna Williams, (redshirt freshman, Cheyenne, Wyo.) was credited with two kills.

McKenna Crews (sophomore, Loveland, Colo.) had 10 digs and four ace serves. Greta Bolognini (freshman, Bergamo Italy,) had nine digs and one ace.

Freshman Jessie Jerome (Rawlins, Wyo.) had 27 assists, six kills, five digs, one assist block and one ace. Alexis Pontine freshman, Ignacio, Colo.) had 10 assists, four digs, one assist block and one ace. Jisell Chumacero (sophomore, Eaton, Colo.) had one ace.

"I also want to say – on National Coaches Day – thanks to all the coaches that made me fall in love with the sport that has given me the best career," Kobza said.

MCC improves to 17-8 overall and 3-2 in the Region IX south division.

Lamar trails the south standings falling 0-7 and 1-16 overall.

MCC was scheduled to travel to Kearney Monday for a triangular, but those matches were canceled.

MCC's next match will be Wednesday at home against Western Nebraska. The Cougars are 22-3 on the year and are ranked No. 6 nationally.

"The ladies have to work on minimizing errors and earning our points instead of giving them to the other team," Kobza said.
