MCC golfers struggle in opening round of NJCAA National Tournament

NEWTON, Kan. – The McCook Community College golf team opened the NJCAA National Tournament Tuesday tied for worst round the team has shot all year at the Sand Creek Golf Course.

"Simply put today was a gut-wrenching day and a worse-case scenario where everyone struggled," said MCC Coach Tyler Loop. "The mistakes just piled up."

MCC, which was ranked No. 13 in the NJCAA D1 men's golf rankings tied a season high score with a 308. They are in 24th place among 24 teams in the four-day tournament – 20 shots over par.

Indian Hills leads the field shooting a 10-under 289. Eastern Florida State is second with a seven-under 281 and Western Texas College is third with a six-under 282.

Eastern Wyoming, which finished second to MCC in Region IX, is in 17th place, shooting a seven-over 295.

"We will regroup and bounce back," said Loop.

Ethan Gough (sophomore, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) shot MCC's low round on the day with a two-over 74. Sophomore Brayden Dahl (Outer West Durban, South Africa) had a 77 and Jordan Bingham (sophomore, South Jordan, Utah) shot a 78.

Freshman Cade Cryer (freshman, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa) was seven-over for the day at 79 and sophomore Cayden Wynne (Lincoln) finished with an 83.

The tournament continues Wednesday through Friday with the second through fourth rounds.
